Willie Mays is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He played 22 seasons in the major leagues, and was a 24-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove winner, and two-time World Series champion. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and his number has been retired by the New York Giants and San Francisco Giants.

Mays was born in Westfield, Alabama, in 1931. He began playing baseball at a young age, and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. He signed with the New York Giants in 1950, and made his major league debut in 1951.

Mays quickly became one of the most exciting players in the game. He was a gifted hitter, fielder, and runner. He could hit for power, average, and speed. He was also a superb defensive player, with a strong arm and a quick glove.

Mays played a key role in the Giants' success in the 1950s and 1960s. He helped the team win the World Series in 1954 and 1962. He was also a key member of the Giants' team that won the National League pennant in 1965.

In 1972, Mays was traded to the San Francisco Giants. He played for the Giants for six seasons, and helped the team win the National League West division title in 1971. He retired from baseball in 1973.

Mays is considered one of the greatest all-around players in baseball history. He is ranked fifth on the all-time list for home runs, and sixth on the all-time list for stolen bases. He is also one of only a few players to have won multiple Gold Glove awards at different positions.

Mays was a pioneer for African-American players in baseball. He was one of the first African-American players to be a regular starter for a major league team, and he helped to pave the way for other African-American players to follow in his footsteps.

Mays is a beloved figure in baseball history. He is a symbol of the game's greatness, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of fans.

In his book, "You Never Heard of Willie Mays? You Never Heard of Nothing!", author James Hirsch provides a comprehensive and engaging look at the life and career of this legendary player. Hirsch draws on extensive interviews with Mays, his family, and friends, as well as archival research, to paint a vivid portrait of the man and his times.

The book covers Mays' early life in Alabama, his rise to stardom with the New York Giants, and his later years with the San Francisco Giants. Hirsch explores Mays' incredible talent on the field and his impact on the game of baseball. He also examines Mays' personal life, including his struggles with racism and his triumphs over adversity.

"You Never Heard of Willie Mays? You Never Heard of Nothing!" is a must-read for any fan of baseball history. Hirsch's engaging writing style and insightful analysis make this book a fascinating and informative read.
