Types of Possessive Forms: Unveiling the Variations

  • Singular Possessive: For singular nouns, append an apostrophe and an "s" to form the possessive case.
    • Example: The boy's toy; The cat's food
  • Plural Possessive: For plural nouns ending in "s," simply add an apostrophe to indicate possession. For irregular plural nouns, append an apostrophe and an "s."
    • Example: The students' books; The children's toys
  • Possessive Pronouns: These pronouns, such as mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs, and whose, indicate possession without requiring a noun.
    • Example: The book is mine; The car is hers

Conversion Rules: Transforming Nouns into Possessives

  • General Rule: For singular nouns, add an apostrophe and an "s" to form the possessive case. For plural nouns ending in "s," simply add an apostrophe.
    • Example: boy -> boy's; cat -> cat's; students -> students'
  • Exceptions for Singular Nouns Ending in "s":
    • Words Ending in "s": Add an apostrophe only.
      • Example: James -> James'
    • Words Ending in "ss": Add an apostrophe and an "es."
      • Example: boss -> boss'es
    • Words Ending in "x" or "z": Add an apostrophe and an "es."
      • Example: box -> box'es; topaz -> topaz'es
  • Irregular Plural Nouns: Treat these nouns as exceptions and follow the general rule.
    • Example: child -> children's; woman -> women's
