Yusra was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1998. She began swimming at a young age and quickly showed promise as a talented athlete. In 2012, the Syrian civil war broke out, and Yusra's family was forced to flee their home. They eventually made their way to Turkey, where Yusra continued to train for swimming.
In 2015, Yusra and her sister Sarah decided to make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. They boarded a small boat with dozens of other refugees, but the boat soon began to sink. Yusra and Sarah jumped into the water and swam for hours, pushing the boat to safety. Their heroic efforts saved the lives of all 20 people on board.
After arriving in Europe, Yusra continued to train for swimming. In 2016, she was selected to compete in the Olympics as a member of the Refugee Olympic Team. She competed in the 100-meter butterfly and the 100-meter freestyle events, and she finished in 41st and 45th place, respectively.
Yusra's story is an inspiring example of the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. She is a role model for refugees around the world, and her story shows that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
