Eli Cohen was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1924. His family was Jewish, and he grew up in a Zionist household. Cohen became involved in Zionist activities at a young age, and in 1947, he immigrated to Israel.
In 1957, Cohen was recruited by the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency. He was given the name "Kamel Amin Thaabet" and sent to Argentina to establish a cover identity. Cohen spent two years in Argentina, learning Spanish and Arabic and building a business network.
In 1960, Cohen was sent to Syria to infiltrate the Syrian government. He quickly established himself as a successful businessman and socialite, and he soon gained access to the highest levels of Syrian society. Cohen befriended many top Syrian officials, including President Amin al-Hafiz.
Cohen provided Israel with invaluable intelligence about Syria's military and political plans. He also helped to sabotage Syrian military operations and to prevent a regional war between Israel and Syria. Cohen's intelligence played a major role in Israel's victory in the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.
In 1965, Cohen was exposed as an Israeli spy and was arrested by the Syrian government. He was sentenced to death and was executed in Damascus in 1965.
Eli Cohen was a true hero of Israel. He risked his life to gather intelligence that helped to protect Israel from its enemies. Cohen's story is an inspiring tale of courage, patriotism, and sacrifice.
Legacy
Eli Cohen's legacy lives on today. He is considered one of the greatest spies in history, and his story has been told in books, movies, and television shows. Cohen's story is a reminder of the importance of intelligence in protecting a nation from its enemies.
In 2000, the Israeli government awarded Cohen the Medal of Valor, Israel's highest military honor. Cohen's family also established the Eli Cohen Foundation to promote peace and understanding between Israel and its neighbors.
