The Black Dahlia Case
On January 15, 1947, the body of Elizabeth Short, a 22-year-old aspiring actress, was found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles. She had been brutally murdered, her body mutilated and drained of blood. The case quickly became known as the Black Dahlia case, and it remains one of the most famous unsolved murders in American history.
The LAPD assigned a team of detectives to the case, led by Captain William Parker. Parker and his team worked tirelessly on the investigation, but they were unable to find any solid leads. The case went cold, and it seemed that the Black Dahlia's killer would never be brought to justice.
In 1999, journalist Steve Hodel published a book in which he claimed that his father, George Hodel, was the Black Dahlia killer. Hodel's book was based on years of research, and it included a number of compelling pieces of evidence. However, the LAPD never reopened the case, and George Hodel died in 1999 without ever being charged with the crime.
The Zodiac Killer
Between 1968 and 1969, a serial killer known as the Zodiac Killer terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area. The Zodiac Killer murdered at least five people, and he sent taunting letters to the police and newspapers. The Zodiac Killer's identity remains unknown, and his case is one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in American history.
The FBI assigned a team of agents to the Zodiac Killer case, but they were unable to identify the killer. The case went cold, and it seemed that the Zodiac Killer would never be brought to justice.
In 2018, a team of codebreakers claimed to have cracked the Zodiac Killer's cipher. The codebreakers believe that the Zodiac Killer was a man named Gary Francis Poste. However, the FBI has not confirmed the codebreakers' findings, and the Zodiac Killer's identity remains unknown.
The Unabomber
Between 1978 and 1995, a serial bomber known as the Unabomber sent 16 bombs to targets in the United States and Europe. The Unabomber's bombs killed three people and injured 23 others. The Unabomber's manifesto, which he sent to the New York Times and the Washington Post, was a rambling screed against modern technology.
The FBI assigned a team of agents to the Unabomber case, but they were unable to identify the bomber. The case went cold, and it seemed that the Unabomber would never be brought to justice.
In 1995, the Unabomber sent a letter to his brother, David Kaczynski. David Kaczynski recognized the Unabomber's writing style, and he contacted the FBI. The FBI arrested the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, at his cabin in Montana. Kaczynski was convicted of the bombings and sentenced to life in prison.
