Richard III was the last king of the Plantagenet dynasty, ruling England from 1483 to 1485. He is one of the most controversial figures in English history, and his reign was marked by violence and turmoil.
In his new biography, William English provides a fresh and nuanced portrait of Richard. Drawing on the latest scholarship, English explores Richard's character, his motivations, and his legacy. He argues that Richard was a complex and contradictory figure, capable of both great cruelty and great kindness.
English begins his book by examining Richard's early life. Richard was born in 1452, the youngest son of Richard, Duke of York. He was a sickly child, and his deformity (he had a hunched back) made him the target of ridicule. Despite his physical challenges, Richard was a bright and ambitious young man. He received a good education, and he was trained in the art of war.
In 1483, Richard's brother, Edward IV, died suddenly. Richard was named Lord Protector of England, and he soon seized the throne for himself. Richard's reign was short and bloody. He had his two young nephews, the Princes in the Tower, murdered, and he was responsible for the deaths of many other nobles. Richard's cruelty alienated his supporters, and he was eventually defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.
Richard III has been the subject of much debate and speculation over the centuries. Some historians have portrayed him as a ruthless tyrant, while others have argued that he was a victim of circumstance. William English's new biography provides a balanced and nuanced account of Richard's life and reign. It is a must-read for anyone interested in English history.
