In her debut novel, Ping Pong Face, Yau Ming Ng Thompson delves into the complex and often contradictory experiences of Chinese-Americans. The book follows the story of a young woman named Lucy as she navigates the challenges of growing up in a bicultural household, coming to terms with her Asian heritage, and finding her own place in the world.

Lucy's journey is a familiar one for many Chinese-Americans. She struggles with the pressure to succeed academically and financially, while also feeling the pull of her family's traditional values. She experiences racism and discrimination, but she also finds strength and support from her community. Through it all, Lucy must learn to balance her two cultures and find her own unique identity.

Thompson's writing is both insightful and compassionate, and she paints a vivid picture of the Chinese-American experience. She explores the complexities of race, class, and gender, and she shows how these factors shape the lives of her characters. Ping Pong Face is a powerful and moving novel that will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to find their place in the world.

An Interview with Yau Ming Ng Thompson

I recently had the opportunity to interview Yau Ming Ng Thompson about her novel, Ping Pong Face. We discussed the inspiration behind the book, her experiences as a Chinese-American writer, and her hopes for the future of Asian-American literature.

Q: What inspired you to write Ping Pong Face?

A: I was inspired to write Ping Pong Face by my own experiences as a Chinese-American woman. I grew up in a bicultural household, and I often felt like I didn't belong in either world. I wanted to write a book that explored the complexities of the Chinese-American experience, and I hoped that it would resonate with other Chinese-Americans who have felt the same way.

Q: What do you hope readers will take away from your novel?

A: I hope that readers will come away from my novel with a better understanding of the Chinese-American experience. I also hope that they will be inspired to think more critically about race, class, and gender, and how these factors shape our lives.

Q: What are your hopes for the future of Asian-American literature?

A: I hope that Asian-American literature will continue to grow and diversify. I want to see more stories from Asian-American writers that explore the full range of our experiences. I also hope that Asian-American literature will become more mainstream, and that it will be read by people of all backgrounds.
