Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a trailblazing jurist and an unwavering champion for gender equality. Her life and work have left an indelible mark on American law and society. This comprehensive and engaging biography explores Ginsburg's remarkable journey, from her humble beginnings to her historic tenure on the Supreme Court.

The Early Years

Ruth Bader was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933. Her father was a furrier and her mother a factory worker. Ginsburg excelled in school and graduated at the top of her class from James Madison High School. She went on to attend Cornell University, where she met her future husband, Martin Ginsburg.

After graduating from Cornell, Ginsburg attended Harvard Law School. She was one of only nine women in her class, and she faced discrimination from both professors and students. Despite these obstacles, she graduated with honors and went on to clerk for Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter.

The Columbia Years

In 1963, Ginsburg joined the faculty of Columbia Law School. She was a brilliant teacher and scholar, and she quickly became a leading voice in the field of sex discrimination law. In 1971, she co-founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Ginsburg's work at the ACLU was instrumental in shaping the legal landscape for women. She argued six landmark cases before the Supreme Court, and she won five of them. These cases overturned laws that discriminated against women in employment, education, and other areas of life.

The Supreme Court

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsburg to the Supreme Court. She was the second woman to serve on the Court, and she quickly became a respected and influential justice.

Ginsburg's opinions on the Court were often groundbreaking. She was a strong advocate for gender equality, and she wrote many important opinions that expanded the rights of women. She also dissented from many decisions that she believed were unfair or unjust.

The Legacy

Ruth Bader Ginsburg died in 2020 at the age of 87. She left behind a legacy of fighting for justice and equality. Her work has had a profound impact on the lives of women and men around the world.

This biography is a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of the Supreme Court, the fight for gender equality, or the life of one of the most influential jurists of our time.
